My wee little friend has returned. This morning I found him napping in the tree above the food area. He was sound asleep, but when I opened the third-story window to snap this photo, I woke him.

Wee Napping Raccoon

Tired and Full of Bird Seed - Napping Raccoon

Everything in the forest thinks my house is the ultimate pit stop. I currently have a bunch of grackles in the trees, and I’m quite shocked they haven’t driven the raccoon to a quieter place to nap. They are unbelievably noisy!

Somehow my house managed to escape relatively unscathed from the tornadoes last weekend.  I watched the storms approach on my phone, and my house fortuitously sat in a gap as they neared Raleigh.  Still, I was worried.  I wasn’t even at home!  I was enjoying some Cuban food and Cuban coffee in Cary when the tornadoes hit.  Thus, I elected to ride out the storms in the Cuban restaurant.  When I finally made it home, I saw the following:

Downed Maple Tree

Downed Maple Tree

This is not a mere branch.  It’s the whole top of the poor maple tree.  I’m just glad it fell away from the house instead of directly onto our roof!

You can see where it snapped in the above photo.  Oh well.  I consider myself fortunate.  The downed portion of the tree will become firewood.  Now I have to get an arborist to look at the remainder of the maple and see if it can be saved or if it needs to come down too.
