I finally hauled the old Spanish desk upstairs from the foyer and organized my components and TV. While it didn’t go quite according to plan, I think it works well. I definitely like the height at which the TV is on the table better than I did when it was on the Salamander cabinet.
In my original idea, I imagined the components fitting into the slots where the drawers are. However, the receiver is far too big for that. I would have to rip out the entire drawer structure and create some new shelving, which I didn’t want to do. I decided to just stack them on the plank that spans the legs, and it works well. I use the drawers to store game controllers and accessories for the XBOX.
I have to organize the wires a bit with some cord covers to hide them along the baseboards, but otherwise I’m pretty happy with the project. I’m actually surprised I was able to fit everything on the plank. In addition to the receiver, cable box, DVD player, and XBOX, I have a wireless access point, router, terrabyte DLNA media drive, and power conditioner on there. I love having access to all my media from the TV!
I decided it would be nifty to have one of those cool utensil rails near the cooktop. I know they sell such things at IKEA, but since I’m not a fan of IKEA, I looked for alternatives and found them in Rösle’s Open Kitchen products:
I like the fact that this is made of quality stainless steel and comes with a variety of utensils ready for hanging. Having everything visible and easily within reach is better than having everything jumbled together in a drawer or utensil crock. I also happen to love how the stainless utensils look against the copper backsplash: nice contrast and tie-in with the stainless appliances.
