I’m participating in the link party over at Our Suburban Cottage:
It’s a very mundane story. Mr. Childfree Chic and I tied the knot on December 21st, 1997. Instead of going on a honeymoon, we packed our belongings and moved from Atlanta, GA to North Carolina. We immediately began looking for a home to buy, and we started watching a channel on our local cable TV which featured real estate listings. One evening, this beauty caught our eye:
We were immediately intrigued by the style of the home and the all-brick construction. By this time we had already looked at several homes, and we were really hoping this was the one. As it turns out, it was just quirky enough to be unappealing to most mainstream home buyers, but it sung to us. We loved the historic feel. We loved the 3.5 wooded acres of land. We loved the fact that it bordered a state park! We closed on it one month after viewing it, and we’ve been slowly putting our own stamp on it since then.
We’ve transformed the front yard. That picture shows it with grass, but getting a lush lawn in full shade is nigh impossible. We decided to scrap the grass and go with a hardscaped courtyard, and this is what it looks like today:
As you can see, this home is built for outdoor living. Between the gallery porches and the firepit, we spend a great deal of time outside the house. In the Summer, you’ll find me on the upper gallery porch sipping a cold beverage and watching the antics of my hummingbirds. In the Fall and early Spring, you’ll find me sitting by a fire on the courtyard patio drinking a warm beverage and making S’mores. Heck, I even like to cook a good meal over a real wood fire in the firepit. I don’t think anything compares to food cooked over real hickory or oak wood! If I could have a wood-burning brick oven in my kitchen, I would do it in a heartbeat.
This is my latest adventure: a blog dedicated to style, decorating, home improvement, and cooking. As some of my friends already know, I’m passionate about creating a beautiful and livable home for myself and Mr. Childfree Chic. Over the years, I’ve turned to the Internet and decorating blogs for inspiration. However, I quickly found that most of them were authored by parents. As such, most of the blogs were very child-centric: kid-friendly decor, dealing with kinder-clutter, kid-approved recipes, kid-themed parties, etc.
Well, that doesn’t apply to me! I’m childless by choice, and my decorating and entertaining decisions don’t revolve around kids. If I want a white upholstered sofa (not slipcovered), I get one. I don’t worry about things like racy artwork, exposed glassware, and an unlocked liquor cabinet. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find a lot of Decorating & Style blogs which are geared towards childfree people like myself. So, here I am, dipping my toe into new waters.
I hope you join me on this adventure. Let’s celebrate the freedom we have to make our homes and our lives truly ours! Over the course of this journal, I hope to have give-aways, discounts, and other goodies for those yearning to build a stylish child-free life.
Cheers,
Ms. Childfree Chic
