The Spanish Desk and media tower aren’t the only antique pieces I have in my house. I also have a piece we lovingly refer to as “the Sex Box.”
It houses some of my liquor that didn’t make it onto the bar in the dining area. As you can see from the photo above, it’s also the home for my Roomba.
But I bet you’re wondering why we call it the Sex Box. Well, it has some pretty interesting carvings on it. Look very closely!
That’s right. That’s someone on all fours with someone else sitting on his back and giving him a paddling. See? SEX BOX. It also has some other, uh, interesting carvings on it as well as a super-cool lock.
When we bought this cabinet, we were actually rummaging around a flea-market type store in search of an old, small armoire for our foyer. However, this piece caught my eye, and I returned to look at it several times before purchasing it. I didn’t realize it had naughty carvings on it until I got it home and looked at it more closely.
We never did buy an armoire for our foyer, but we did purchase something else. Stay tuned to find out what that was!
I previously posted about repurposing an antique Spanish desk as a media center, and someone commented on the “armoire” next to it. It really isn’t an armoire. It’s more like a storage tower. It’s too skinny to be an armoire.
Can you believe that item was FREE? Yep. We acquired it in college when the Mister purchased the Spanish desk. When we went to retrieve the desk, the lady selling it asked if we would also like to buy the storage tower. When the Mister said he didn’t want it, she said, “I’ll give it to you if you’ll just take it away!” That means we got a solid wood desk and a solid wood storage unit for $20. So, we loaded it into the truck with the desk, and it has been with us ever since. I currently use it to store my DVDs and XBOX games:
I love the carvings on it. Other than that, I don’t know too much about it. I can’t find a maker’s mark on it, and I’m not sure it’s related to the Spanish desk aside from coming into our lives at the same time as it. I think the carvings on it look Mexican in origin, but I’m not a carving expert; don’t take my word on that! I like the fact that it’s solid wood too. That tower will be here after modern, cheap furniture made of press board is long gone.
